The 3 Job Application Follow Up Email Templates You Should Always Send

Did you know you should be sending three follow up emails to almost every job you apply to?  Are you doing that in your job search?  Consistent follow up is important to staying at the top of the mind of the recruiter and hiring manager.  Here are three follow up email templates you can copy and paste and the right time to send each one.

1. After You Apply

Send this email one week after your application has been submitted:

Here are three reasons why I should be considered for this role:

1. I am known as [ 1 soft skill and 1 hard skill: a talented mentor and trainer, highly proficient in java.]

2. My previous experience as a [relevant previous position title] will allow me to quickly learn your processes and succeed in the role.

3. I’m engaging and enthusiastic about software development and thrive in the agile process.

In addition to submitting through the careers page, I’ve attached my resume and cover letter further detailing my qualifications and experiences. I hope to hear from you soon.

Talk soon,

Sally

2: The Day of Your Interview

Send this email as soon as you get home from your interview, or one hour after your interview if it’s on the phone.

Subject: Thank you, Debra!

Good morning Debra,

Thank you again for your time today, I really enjoyed learning more about your experience at [Company Name] and how you’re working toward [event/goal discussed]. I really believe in your product, and I would love to prove to you and the team that I’m a great fit for the role.

Thanks again for chatting today, and I look forward to talking more in the future.

Sally

P.S. Enjoy your yoga class this week!

3. After the Hiring Manager’s Stated Decision Deadline

One of the questions you ask in the interview should be: what is your time frame to make a decision on this position?  Send this email one day after the stated deadline.

Subject: Still Interested in the Position!

Hi Debra,

I hope this note finds you well. Your recent blog post regarding github tips and tricks was outstanding, and one that I thoroughly enjoyed reading!

You mentioned that you’d be making a decision for the java developer position by the end of the day yesterday. Do you have any updates on the role? Please let me know if there’s anything I can provide to assist you in your decision-making process.

Thank you,

Sally

By sending these three follow up emails, you prove to hiring managers that you are a people person, pay attention to deadlines, listen and most importantly that you are more interested in the role than other candidates.
