Join our team of talented ALMers working to create exceptional experience for our audiences and customers across the globe.
About the Team:
The In-House Desk at ALM is in charge of covering one of the most interesting and important beats for the future of the legal industry: corporate law departments and the general counsel who run them. Reporters on the desk have the opportunity to delve into some of the big business and legal issues affecting these attorneys today. We are a collegial and enthusiastic group of reporters spread across the country, and we are determined to find out what makes in-house lawyers tick. Reporters on the desk write both web stories and feature-length content for Corporate Counsel, ALM’s magazine for in-house legal.
What you’ll do:
You’ll be tasked with overseeing a desk of reporters covering general counsel and in-house legal departments both in America and abroad for ALM’s publications, including Corporate Counsel, Law.com, The American Lawyer, The National Law Journal, The New York Law Journal, The Recorder, and more. You’ll be overseeing a desk that is focused especially on legal operations, innovations, technology, strategy and trends. How are GC’s advising their clients? How are in-house legal operations changing and innovating and responding to outside forces? What are the challenges GCs face, and how do they confront them? These are the types of questions the desk is constantly asking. There will be a mix of editing quick daily stories, as well as longer enterprise stories for both the web and print. These are the primary coverage areas for the desk:
- In-house legal operations
- Internal investigations and crisis response
- Relationships to outside law firms
- Staffing
- Use of technology
- Global GCs
- Adapting to regulations
- Innovation
- Relationship to companies and key industries, such as tech, healthcare, energy, etc.
ABOUT THE JOB:
You will work with the reporters to execute a healthy mix of daily stories, short-term enterprise, and longer-term enterprise and investigative reporting. Our general expectations are that reporters will average at least a story a day and two enterprise stories a month, though better reporters routinely exceed that. You will work closely with the brand editor for Corporate Counsel magazine to execute in print feature articles and projects, as well as other brand editors, and also work with the editors overseeing the other theme desks in aggressively pursuing important stories and working collaboratively on bigger investigative and enterprise projects. You’ll need to be able to quickly assess news, the needs of the various brands, as well as talk through stories with reporters and coach them.
Responsibilities:
- Manage up to five reporters and edit their stories each day and post them to the Web
- Build a reliable network of sources from corporate legal departments, law firms and consultants and help the reporters develop a stable of sources
- Follow the in-house beat, getting to know the big players, companies, trends, challenges and problems facing general counsel

- Come up with ideas for both daily and enterprise coverage
- Travel to corporate counsel meetings and events as necessary
- Maintain a Twitter account to build your persona brand (can use existing Twitter account)
- Work with the Corporate Counsel brand editor and other editorial leaders to plan coverage issues, execute magazine articles, and deliver on new initiatives aimed at general counsel
- Be able to write stories regularly and write the week Inside Track briefing
- Edit clean and quickly, and help coach reporters to write both daily stories and enterprise
Qualifications:
- Degree in journalism or communications, or relevant experience
